Welcome to the application for Staff level Lay Ecclesial Ministry Certification for the Archdiocese of Detroit!

Make sure you have review the checklist for Staff Level Certification and completed all of the steps before completing this application.

In order to complete this application, you will need the following information:
- Contact information for you, your sponsor and your supervisor.
- Documentation in PDF format of your prior academic work for intellectual formation.
- Documentation of how you satisfied the hours for pastoral formation.
- Any information related to equivalencies already approved.
- Make sure you have met with your sponsor and they are prepared to fill out the sponsor reference form when it comes to them via email.
- Make sure your priest has received the Priest Reference Form and is prepared to fill that out and email to certification@shms.edu

Sponsor Information
A sponsor is a priest, deacon, lay ministry staff member or stable volunteer with whom you collaborate regularly or who can attest to your pastoral, spiritual and human formation. This person must be:
- A fully initiated Catholic in good standing
- Employed or a stable volunteer at a Catholic parish or organization who is certified by the Archdiocese (NB - those certified in previous versions of certification are automatically renewed until June 30, 2028. If you have questions about this standard contact certification@shms.edu)
- Someone with whom you regularly interact or who is in a position to know your strengths and challenges in ministry
- Willing to complete the Sponsor Reference Form

In order to be certified, you must be a stable volunteer or staff member at a parish or school within the Archdiocese of Detroit, and be under the direct supervision of a priest, principal or delegated staff member of that parish or family of parishes.

Intellectual Formation

Standard: Complete the Certificate of Catholic Theology at Sacred Heart Major Seminary or it’s equivalent.
Have you been awarded a Certificate in Catholic Theology through Sacred Heart Major Seminary, or completed the same classes at SHMS on your way to another degree, certificate or diploma?
Have you already received approval for this equivalency from the Certification office?
Upload an unofficial transcript from SHMS which shows you have completed the courses of the CCT. You can access your transcript through your Populi account at SHMS, or contact registrar@shms.edu for assistance.

Upload transcripts from other institutions which show completion of the same material. Note, these courses must be from an accredited Catholic college or university, have been completed with a passing grade, and be similar in content and credit hours. If you need assistance on how to locate your transcripts, contact certification@shms.edu.

Pastoral Formation

Standard: 10 hours AOD/SHMS Formation or ministry specific training (evidence: certificates of attendance, letters of verification from presenters). Note: this must include the online workshops listed below. The required workshops can completed at http://equip.shms.edu
